Currently, the FDA has approved molecular targeted therapies to treat breast cancer, chronic myeloid leukemia, colorectal cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, lung cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and pancreatic cancer. Research is also underway in many other types of cancer.

To improve cancer treatment outcomes, molecular targeted therapies are often used in combination with chemotherapy.

Sometimes molecular targeted therapies are used by themselves after chemotherapy. They may be given through the vein (intravenously) and administered in the hospital, or they may come in the form of a pill and may be taken conveniently at home.

Both IV and pill forms of molecular targeted therapies have been shown to be very effective in treating certain types of cancer.

Your doctor can tell you if molecular targeted therapy is appropriate for you, as well as how it might work as part of your treatment plan.
